A customer buys a stunning piece of apparel during your latest promotion using a discount code. It arrives, but they need a different size or color. They happily head into your self-service return portal to make an exchange.

But the moment they select the replacement item, the discount disappears. The new variant shows up at full retail price.

Confused and frustrated that they are being “penalized” just for changing sizes, the customer abandons the exchange and submits a support ticket. Overwhelmed by manual adjustments, your support agent decides the easiest way out is to just issue a full refund.

Just like that, you’ve lost a sale, paid for return shipping, and left a customer with a sour taste in their mouth.

How It Works under the Hood

The system intelligently calculates and carries over Shopify “Amount off order” discounts based on how the original discount was structured:

  1. Fixed-Amount Discounts ($): If a shopper returns an item that carried a specific dollar discount (e.g., a $20 prorated discount on that item), that exact amount applies directly to the exchange item.

  2. Percentage-Based Discounts (%): The system takes the discount rate from the original order and applies it directly to the base price of the new exchange item. If they exchange a $700 item (10% off = $70) for an upgraded $800 item, they automatically get 10% off the new item ($80).

  3. Stacked/Mixed Discounts ($ + %): If the original order utilized both a fixed-amount and percentage discount, Synctrack automatically calculates and carries both values over smoothly.

What happens if they upgrade to a more expensive item?

Synctrack recalculates the balance fairly. The original discount percentage or allocated amount applies to the new item first, and the customer only pays the remaining difference.

Real-World Example:

  • Original Item: Purchased for $100 with a 15% discount (Customer paid $85).

  • New Exchange Item: Upgraded to a $150 item.

  • The Logic: Synctrack applies the 15% discount to the new item ($150 – 15% = $127.50 value).

  • The Checkout: The customer only pays the clear difference: $42.50 ($127.50 new value – $85 original store credit).

How to set it up?

We’ve made this incredibly easy to deploy. If you are currently utilizing our Exchange options, follow these simple steps:

  1. Log into your Synctrack Returns Dashboard.

  2. Navigate to Settings > Configuration.

  3. Scroll to the exchange rules and Tick the checkbox for “Apply discounts to exchange items.”

  4. Click Save.
