Avoid double-charging tax on US returns with Synctrack

30 October, 2026

Starting October 23, 2026, Shopify tax on return shipping fees applies to US orders. If your store uses Shopify Tax and ships to a US state that taxes shipping, part of every customer refund now goes to the tax on the return shipping fee. If your returns app doesn’t know that, the refund it shows the shopper and the refund Shopify actually sends can drift apart, and the tax can end up counted twice.

Synctrack Returns & Exchanges has already adapted to the change. The refund amount in your Return Portal, request screens and refund flow now matches Shopify automatically, so customers see the right number before they submit and your team keeps processing returns as usual.

What Changed: Shopify Now Taxes Return Shipping Fees on US Orders

According to the Shopify changelog, Shopify now taxes return shipping fees the same way it taxes other shipping charges. The tax is taken from the customer’s refund. Instead of changing the fee you set, Shopify lowers the Taxes line of the return.

  • Who it affects: stores using Shopify Tax (or Shopify’s Tax Platform) with orders shipped to the US.
  • Where it applies: only US states that tax shipping. Your existing shipping tax settings still decide whether a state is taxed.
  • What stays the same: your return shipping fee keeps the amount you set. Only the Taxes line goes down.
  • What is not affected: tax-exempt customers, orders shipped outside the US, and restocking, handling, return/exchange and label fees.

Example: how the US return shipping tax changes a refund

Here is a New York return at an 8% tax rate with a $20.00 return shipping fee:

Line Before Oct 23 From Oct 23
Returned item $629.95 $629.95
Taxes refunded $50.39 $48.79
Return shipping fee -$20.00 -$20.00
Customer receives $660.34 $658.74

From October 23, the Taxes line is $50.39 – $1.60 = $48.79. The $1.60 is the 8% tax on the $20.00 return shipping fee.

How Synctrack Returns Prevents Double Tax on Shopify Returns

Synctrack Returns applies the new tax logic for you. It is available on all plans and switches on automatically for stores using Shopify Tax with orders shipped to the US.

  • Screens match Shopify: the Return Portal, request detail, review, create/edit request and refund screens show Taxes already reduced by the return shipping fee tax.
  • Tax is never counted twice: manual refunds, automation/auto refunds and Sidekick refunds use exactly the amount Shopify expects.
  • Other fees stay untaxed: for US orders, only the return shipping fee is sent to Shopify. Return/exchange fees and label fees are deducted by the app.
  • Non-US orders work as before: orders outside the US and stores not using Shopify Tax keep the same refund behavior.

What Shoppers See in the Return Portal

Shoppers see the expected refund before they submit a request. Synctrack uses Shopify’s own tax estimate, so the refund shown in the portal matches what the customer receives. That means fewer “why is my refund lower?” tickets for your support team.

  • Clear Taxes line: the return shipping fee shows without tax, and Taxes shows the reduced amount. Hover the ⓘ icon next to Taxes for a short explanation.
  • Other refund methods: for gift card, discount code, bank transfer or “Mark as refunded”, the customer gets the full product tax back, because Shopify doesn’t charge this tax there.
  • Final number: Shopify finalizes the tax at refund time, so the refund screen is always the final amount.

Check Your Setup for Shopify Tax on Return Shipping Fees

Most stores need no extra setup. Run through these quick checks to make sure nothing in your setup charges the tax twice.

Quick check (3 steps)

  1. Remove any manual tax from your fee. If you raised your return shipping fee to cover tax (for example $20 to $21.60), set it back to the pre-tax amount in Settings -> Fees. Otherwise customers pay the tax twice.
  2. Refund US returns inside Synctrack Returns. If you refund directly in Shopify Admin, Shopify doesn’t deduct your return/exchange, label or restocking fees, so its default refund amount is too high. If you must refund in Shopify Admin, lower the amount manually by those fees.
  3. Update your policy text. If your return policy says the return shipping fee is “tax free” or a fixed amount deducted from the refund, update the wording.
Refunding through an integration (Open API)? If your system doesn’t send an amount, the app calculates the correct one. If it sends its own amount or reads tax figures from Synctrack, note that for US orders the tax returned is the tax actually refunded (product tax minus the fee tax). Please let your developer know.

Keep Refunds Accurate After the Shopify Tax Change

The update is live for every Synctrack Returns & Exchanges store on all plans. If you use Shopify Tax and ship to the US, your refunds already follow the new rule. Take two minutes to review your return shipping fee in Settings -> Fees, and chat with our team if you’d like help walking through your setup.
