Australia Post traces its origins to the colonial postal services established in 1809. Following federation in 1901, the Postmaster-General’s Department was created to oversee postal and telecommunications. In 1975, Australia Post was formed as a statutory authority, later becoming a government-owned corporation. Today, it operates over 8,500 Post Offices, handles millions of items daily and employs more than 35,000 people.

Q1: What does Pending mean when tracking my item?
‘Pending’ indicates the parcel hasn’t yet been scanned into the system. It may not have been posted or is awaiting a first barcode scan.
Q2: What does In Transit mean when tracking my item?
‘In Transit’ means the parcel is on its way between facilities or to the delivery address, following its initial scan.
Q3: What does Can’t Be Tracked mean?
This appears for services without standard tracking (e.g., International Economy). No scan events will display, though Registered services still require a signature on delivery.
Q4: What does Returned to Sender mean?
The item is on its way back to the sender due to failed delivery attempts, unknown recipient, or refusal to accept the parcel.
Q5: How long until the first tracking update appears?
Allow up to 24–48 hours after posting for the first status change. If no update appears after this window, use 13 POST or the online form to enquire.
